SideStreets™

Supplemental Reading and Mathematics
Grades 1-8

SideStreets is an exciting reading and mathematics supplemental curriculum for grades 1 through 8. It is ideal for school day, extended day, or summer school programs, as well as for RTI initiatives – and it offers strategies and accommodations for English language learners. SideStreets includes integrated assessments -- and a unique, optional, online assessment component.

The SideStreets Approach

CORE K12 Education believes that students learn best by doing, -- and our SideStreets supplementary curriculum applies this philosophy to build essential reading and math skills quickly and effectively. This is a high-interest program where each lesson is packed with fun and interesting activities designed to promote achievement for struggling students. Lessons include multiple opportunities to learn through a variety of modalities. Under-prepared students receive both guided instruction and challenging activities that demand critical thinking, problem-solving skills, creativity, and reflection.

SideStreets in Action

In an intervention program, students use the SideStreets Student Edition as their primary text to discover, explore, discuss, practice and reflect on the foundational concepts and skills of their grade level. The lesson structure offers scaffolded, guided instruction, discussion, practice, hands-on activities, problem-solving activities, and both written and oral reflection. Learners also write in Student Journals to provide a running record/history of acquired study skills and developed metacognitive abilities. Additional targeted remediation can be provided through the accompanying Skills Book. All SideStreets components are tightly interrelated, and provide all the resources teachers need to implement a successful program that promotes student success. The Student Edition is consumable and intended as a take-home piece at the end of the program to help support continued learning and parental involvement.

Implementing SideStreets

SideStreets provides 40+ hours of instruction, per subject, per grade level. It can be used during school, after school, in extended day, or in summer school programs. SideStreets is not simply student-friendly -- it is also teacher-friendly. It includes suggested (not required) scripting, and all needed materials in a single package – allowing extended-day teachers to transfer materials from class to class conveniently. It is particularly adaptable for novice teachers or teachers who may not be trained in the subject areas.

Highlights for Mathematics

SideStreets math lessons integrate shared sets of classroom manipulates to help students develop their critical sense of connection between the abstract and the concrete. Manipulative sets offer ability-suited components like: number lines, base ten counters, attribute blocks, dual scale thermometers, Geoboards, Algebra titles, balances, and more.

Highlights for Reading

SideStreets reading lessons integrate a collection of leveled readers for each grade. Completing an entire book helps students acknowledge their own tangible milestones – an essential process for critical confidence and capability with the written word. The collections represent a number of genres, both fiction and non-fiction, and classic and contemporary authors.

Highlights for English Language Learners

SideStreets lessons incorporate a range of engaging materials that encourage students to Read, Write, Listen, and Speak – that's all four processes – for every objective in every lesson. This makes SideStreets an ideal supplemental curriculum for students learning to use English – either as a first or second language. Strategies for accommodating English language learners is included throughout the teacher edition.

Integrated Assessments

Each grade level of the program includes its own Pre- and Post-Course Assessments, which provides teachers with data about each class's strengths and weaknesses – and benchmarks student success in the program. Teachers take stock of progress along the way through periodic Guidepost Quizzes. And assessments offer Error Analysis to help turn a student's "miss" into a positive win.

Online Assessment Options

As a valuable option, SideStreets offers an online assessment component. The option includes pre-designed online tests, allowing schools to assess online -- and use resulting student data to inform instruction. This component employs CORE K12's innovative Return on Investment (ROI) reporting, which not only groups students by identified deficits, but also rank orders the deficits to help teachers target instruction more efficiently. This ROI reporting can be very helpful in after-school or summer programs where instructional time may be limited and efficient use of instructional time is significant.

Professional Development

Flexible professional development is the key to any successful program. SideStreets offers a variety of configurations to fit the needs of virtually any faculty.

Final Notes

When students focus on essential skills, they build a solid foundation that leads them toward mastery. SideStreets is uniquely designed to provide that focus.
