Supplemental English/Language Arts and Mathematics

High School

Prospects is an English/language arts and mathematics supplemental curriculum designed to address the high school content students need to master to be successful in their classes and with their exit exams. It is ideal for school day, extended day, or summer school programs, as well as for RTI initiatives - and it offers strategies and accommodations for English language learners. Prospects includes integrated assessments - and a unique, optional, online assessment component.

The Prospects Approach

Prospects in ELA and Prospects in Math are supplemental curriculum programs designed for targeted instruction for high school students. With the Prospects approach, students work in collaborative groups on the skills they need to master in order to succeed in high school and on their exit exams. The course is highly interactive and motivating, and thus class sessions are lively and engaging.

An Ideal Supplement for Learning English

Prospects lessons incorporate a range of engaging materials that encourage students to Read, Write, Listen, and Speak - that's all four processes - for every objective in every lesson. This makes Prospects an ideal supplemental curriculum for students learning to use English - either as a first or second language.

Prospects in Action

Throughout the course, students use Practice Sets as their primary media to discover, explore, discuss, practice and reflect on the foundational concepts and skills. Each Practice Set is a separate 48 to 60 page booklet that provides scaffolded instruction on a specific skill (as in Math) or theme (as in ELA). The Practice Sets are organized in modular kit format with 20 different skills-based Practice Sets for Math and 16 different theme-based booklets for ELA. Each Practice Set serves to guide the lesson and includes a variety of related activities. Generally students will need 5-8 periods to complete a Practice Set.

With Prospects, students will:

  • Work in small groups to achieve in a supportive learning community
  • Assume roles within the group to increase participation and accountability
  • Use Practice Sets to guide the lesson and organize individual's work
  • Connect learning concepts to real world scenarios
  • Use skill-based Journal Writing and reflection prompts on lessons learned

Implementing Prospects

Prospects can accommodate as little as 30-40 hours of instruction or up to 80 hours of instruction for use during the school day. The flexible program design also makes it ideal as an after-school solution and can accommodate 40 - 1 hour sessions after school.

When using Prospects in ELA, educators should start with the Pre-Course Assessment and the Getting Started lessons found in the student journals. Through most of the program, students will work in small groups on the practice sets assigned to them. At the end of the program, teachers should administer the Post-Course Assessment to measure each student's growth.

Highlights for Mathematics

  • Scaffolded instruction and practice
  • Warm-Up activities, challenge problems, and journal-writing prompts
  • Tips and practice with calculators
  • Embedded assessments, including one quiz per Practice Set

Highlights for ELA

  • Each Practice Set provides 4 passages of different genres, linked by a motivating theme
  • Low-level, high-interest reading selections
  • Warm-up activities, journaling opportunities, and scaffolded instruction
  • One quiz per Practice Set

Assessments

The program includes its own Pre- and Post-Course Assessments, which help the teacher group students of like deficits and assign Practice Sets to accommodate needs. Teachers take stock of progress along the way with a proficiency Quiz at the conclusion of each set.

Optional Online Assessments

As a valuable option, Prospects offers an online assessment component. The option includes pre-designed online tests, allowing schools to assess online -- and use resulting student data to inform instruction. This component employs CORE K12's innovative Return on Investment (ROI) reporting, which not only groups students by identified deficits, but also rank orders the deficits to help teachers target instruction more efficiently. This ROI reporting can be very helpful in after-school or summer programs where instructional time may be limited and efficient use of instructional time is significant.
