Student Performance Improves over one year In 2006, the second most populous district in America, the Los Angeles Unified School District, sought to streamline their periodic assessment program. Their immense program logistics needed custom technology and focused operations. CORE K12 stepped in to deliver one of the largest, most complex district wide assessment programs in the country. The program now serves nearly all 700,000 students in the district, delivering 76 unique periodic assessments across 232 distinct testing windows between early July and late June. Subjects include math, ELA, science, and history/social science in various grades from kindergarten through high school. There are constructed response questions on every exam. CORE K12's local, full-time project managers keep the program running smoothly across its 600+ schools covering 1,000 square miles. They also work closely with district teams to develop custom reports, manage centralized scanning, provide on-site training, and more. Participation has grown every year to well over 70%. While correlation does not equal causation, the trend is clear: the greater the students' participation with the program, the higher the scores on the state test. In nearly every grade the number of Advanced and Proficient students nearly doubles from those who took no tests to those who took all three, and the number of Below Basic and Far Below Basic is cut by nearly two-thirds.
The largest formative assessment program in the nation. The Texas Education Agency (TEA) had one overarching goal for their Web-based formative assessment program – to effectively change instructional practice in the classroom. They needed greater usability, quality TEKS aligned items, an intuitive Web-based platform, on-demand training and support, and a true partnership with the vendor. CORE K12's solution brought all of that and more. In just two months, CORE K12 blueprinted all the Math and Science assessments, developed a customized Web based platform, and created an online video training series to help reach over 1000 districts, across 850 square miles. Assessments could be administered in English or Spanish and taken online or on paper, with the resulting data enabling teachers to guide further action in the classroom. Although TEA had envisioned and funded the new program, participation by the districts and schools was completely voluntary. By October 31st, just 6 weeks after the official launch, 309 districts and 551,000 students were enrolled. Ten weeks later, 490 districts and 1,211,000 students were enrolled. By the end of the first year the system contained over 1.6 million students... more than half of those in the entire state.

In the second year of the program, the TEA has contracted with partner CORE K12 Education to create an Algebra Screener for grades 5 through 8. The partnership employs Universal Design to create the assessment items, and assure the highest quality experience for all students. This project represents a significant leap forward by providing both school districts and researchers with important growth measurement data. Such data will help identify the crucial skills a student must master to be successful in Algebra. The TEA/CORE K12 partnership's new program represents an innovation in formative assessment systems -- as it provides true growth data.
